Christopher D. Thompson

Christopher D. Thompson is Senior Counsel at C&O Law Group, LLC, admitted to practice in Virginia and Washington, D.C. With more than 30 years of experience, he advises a broad spectrum of clients — from individuals, families, and small business owners to investment funds, corporations, and large multilateral organizations — on matters ranging from estate planning and business formation to international commercial transactions.

Chris began his career rooted in the conviction that law should work at every level: for the individual navigating a complex system, and for the institutional frameworks that shape how economies and markets function. That philosophy has guided a career spanning private client representation and senior roles at leading professional services firms, including Deloitte, BearingPoint, KPMG Consulting, and Dexis. In those capacities, he led cross-border merger and acquisition transactions, drafted legislation and regulations, and designed and implemented large-scale commercial law reform programs across emerging markets.

At C&O Law Group, Chris focuses on estate planning, wills and trusts, small business representation, and bankruptcy matters before the U.S. District Court and U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He brings the same disciplined, systems-level thinking to every client engagement — whether helping a family plan for the future or guiding a business through a critical legal challenge.

Chris earned his Juris Doctor from George Mason University School of Law in 1990 and his Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Utah. He was admitted to the Virginia Bar in 1991 and the District of Columbia Bar in 1992, and holds federal court admissions to the U.S. District Court and U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. He is a member of the DC Bar Association, the Virginia State Bar, and the American Bar Association's Business Law Section, Law Practice Division, and Senior Lawyers Division. He speaks English, Bulgarian, and Italian fluently, with basic proficiency in Turkish.

Beyond his legal practice, Chris has served in institutional leadership roles reflecting his long engagement with international civil society. He served on the Board of Trustees of RIT Kosovo (formerly American University in Kosovo) from 2019 to 2024, and has held board memberships with the American Chambers of Commerce in Kosovo and Bulgaria, and the Fulbright Bulgarian-American Commission, where he served as Chairman in 2008.
